Solid construction, fool proof operation, great sound, at-a-glance metering and a bulletproof output stage all contributed to its popularity with musicians, recording studios, consultants and installers, and broadcast media production people alike. The same classic sound, easy set-up and no compromise metering is now married to an improved signal path and stronger chassis design. Or use the 160A's Hard Knee compression and high ratios (up to and beyond:1 and over 60dB gain reduction) for bombproof protection against overload distortion in digital recording, P.A. systems and broadcast signals. A detector input can be used with an equalizer for de-essing sibilant vocals and selectively smoothing out boomy notes on acoustic guitar and bass. The 160A follows that tradition, while meeting the challenges of a digital world.ent in the mix, or overall characteristics of 4 independent signals or control the gain leveling on a couple of stereo pairs, the dbx 160A is for you. New floating balanced output stage drives any load Most do have example settings and an explanation of the different controls. For further information and example settings please see the Compression 101 White Paper. Negative ratios can also be used to prevent musicians from continually increasing the volume. The converse of the above EQ technique may be used: dipping the equalizer bands.Grounding. In the studio, the 160A can be used on everything from vocals to percussion. In live sound reinforcement, the 160A can allow the engineer to get that “fat studio sound” out of the drum kit or provide protection limiting for the speakers. It is also an excellent line driver, perfect for sending signals down long cables to power amp stacks or from remote broadcast trucks. In Bypass mode, however, the RING is connected to the COLD (-) leads of the input jacks, to allow for balanced connections.http://www.jurad.eu/files/crt-monitor-user-manual.xml

GROUND (GND) Lift Switch: This switch allows for troubleshooting hum (line interference) caused by ground loops. See Figure 3 above. The control curve of the RATIO potentiometer has been designed to provide total operator control, with scale expansion at the subtle lower ratios for easy, repeatable settings. With their signal compressed by a negative COMPRESSION RATIO, each volume increase initiated at the instrument or amp would actually decrease the volume level at the final mix. If the 160A is placed before the EQ (equalizer), for example, a potentially damaging boost in the EQ won't be seen by the 160A and the speakers may be damaged. (see Multi-way speaker systems, page 9.) For maximum sound pressure levels, large sound reinforcement systems frequently use a separate compressor on each output of the electronic crossover(s). Severe damage system components may result. Most balanced (3-conductor) cables have the shield connected at both ends. This can result in ground loops which cause hum. If hum is a problem, try changing the position of the rear panel GROUND LIFT switch. This switch disconnects the input XLR pin 1 (the shield) from the 160A's chassis ground. It is also an excellent line driver, perfect for sending signals down long cables to power amp stacks or from remote broadcast trucks. In radio or television broadcast, the 160A will produce stable voice levels, even with non-professional subjects. Bypass mode is especially useful for making comparisons between pro- cessed and unprocessed signals. SLAVE Button and LED: The strapping cable must be removed for proper single-channel operation.

If both SLAVE buttons are depressed, both units will be bypassed (i.e., fixed at unity gain). THRESHOLD Control. The amber THRESHOLD LED turns On when the signal is in the OverEasy region.See Figure 1. The green “BELOW” LED is On when the signal is below threshold and the red “ABOVE” LED is On when the signal is above threshold. When the 160A is switched to OverEasy mode, the amber LED is On when the signal is in the OverEasy region (See Figure 2). COMPRESSION RATIO Control. It's not the meter cal that's the issue here; the controls are waaay off. I opened it up and there's a half-dozen trimpots. My presumption is that a trimpot moved at some point (maybe after I dropped my rack) and the thing needs to be re-calibrated. I suppose I could draw a schematic but I've got better things to do. -a It's not the meter cal that's the issue here; the controls are waaay off. I opened it up and there's a half-dozen trimpots. There may be offset calibrations for discrete log converter circuits that could throw thresholds off. If it's AFU you don't have much to lose from twiddling and seeing what each does or doesn't do, but I'd remember where they were before you proceed to twiddle about. JR Let me know? My presumption is that a trimpot moved at some point (maybe after I dropped my rack) and the thing needs to be re-calibrated. I suppose I could draw a schematic but I've got better things to do. -a Unfortunately the schematics are either really small and hard to read or take up three pages Fortunately, it has an adjustment procedures list that tell you how to calibrate it DBX's response is lame in the extreme - the info you need is sitting in some file cabinet in their office. Contrast this to Symetrix, who are quite happy to publish the schematics for their legacy products. -a My 160X is back to where it should be, which is to say set up equal to the XT and the A. Turns out that a) RMS symmetry was off, b) there was a slight bit of control-voltage feedthrough, and c) both the threshold cal and inf:1 ratio cals were waaay off. Some tweaks and it's all better. I wonder how long it takes a tech to cal this unit at the factory. The XT's chassis is much sturdier, although it has the same crappy jacks. X and XT share the same meter circuit board. The A's chassis is a slight step backwards from the XT but nowhere near as flimsy as the X. Better jacks, too. One thing that's odd is that neither the X nor the A have internal mains fuses (there's space on the PCBs for them) but the XT has a fuse. And they all sound the same to me. -a.
